---Planting Guidelines:
Plant your dahlias after the final spring frost, once the soil temperature has warmed to at least 15°C. Choose a well-draining, rich, organic flower bed or container. Loosen the soil to a depth of around 30 cm and mix in compost and a balanced granular fertilizer.
To plant:
Dig a hole and place the tuber with the eye or sprout facing upward.
Position the top of the tuber about 10 cm below the surface.
Fill in with soil, press down firmly, and water thoroughly to remove any air pockets.
If planting in a container, make sure it has proper drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.
---Tips for Growing Healthy Dahlias:
1. Avoid Overwatering Early On: After the initial watering at planting, hold off on watering again until you see the first signs of growth. Too much moisture early can cause tubers to rot.
2. Keep Foliage Dry: To reduce the risk of disease, try to keep the leaves dry. Water deeply once or twice a week, letting the top 2.5 cm of soil dry out between watering.
3. Feed Regularly: Apply an organic, water-soluble fertilizer every 3–4 weeks until March. Stop feeding after that to help the tubers harden off for better overwintering.
4. Deadhead for More Blooms: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. Use clean, sharp scissors and snip just above a leaf node.
5. Cut for Bouquets: Cutting long stems not only gives you beautiful blooms indoors but also promotes more branching and flowering outdoors.
6. Don't Grow from Seed: Dahlias don’t reproduce true from seed. If you'd like to multiply your collection, focus on storing and dividing tubers.
7. Winter Care: After the first frost, tubers can be lifted and stored. However, in most areas of South Africa, it's safe to leave them in the ground to overwinter—they’ll return the following spring.
